For Such a Time as This!

God made us to be fulfilled and never meant for us to drift through life without meaning or purpose.

We live busy lives. The world demands our attention in so many areas. But, spending time alone with God in fasting, praying and reading the Bible helps to quieten us and allow God to speak to us.

In this post, I want to share some thoughts and unpack a part of the story of Esther to encourage us. When reading this story, we can see God orchestrating the events in this story. Mordecai knew the Jew's lives were in danger and he could see Esther's position in the palace as an opportunity to save her people. When he finds out that the enemy is planning to destroy his people, he pleads with Esther, that this is an opportunity for her to save her people. Why else, he reminded Esther, would she have come into a royal position but, for 'such a time as this!' If Esther didn't do it, someone else would do it but Esther would miss her chances to save her people.

The story of Esther is a beautiful story that tells of a young woman's obedience and courage that led to saving her people from being destroyed. Mordecai's message to Esther was to go before the king and beg for mercy for her people. Esther’s initial response was to let Mordecai know that the king has a law, that anyone approaching the king in the inner court of the palace without being summoned will be put to death. Unless the king extends the golden sceptre to them and spares their lives. Esther felt limited to doing anything because the law compromised her safety. But Mordecai sent another message to challenge Esther, saying,

"Do not think that because you are in the king's house you alone of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this." (Esther 4:13-14).

We are living in difficult times. Look around our communities; family structures are breaking down and the existing support systems do not meet our families' complex needs. The neglect and abuse of children continue. Sadly, the news is filled with stories of children, young people who are trying to meet their basic needs of food, belonging etc, through other means such as gang affiliations, crime; stealing, drugs and alcohol, and you can add to the list. Some parents are struggling with their responsibilities to care for and protect their children.

The story of Esther brings a clear message to stir up our hearts, to challenge us as well. God has a purpose for every one of us and He has created us to fulfil His purpose. The apostle Paul says,

"We are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:10 NKJV).

God has given each of us skills, positions, resources, education and more with opportunities for each one of us to extend His kingdom's purposes. He didn’t place you or me where we are so we could just talk about Jesus in church or just enjoy being with our families.

Cultivating a close relationship with God through prayer, meditation, and Bible study is essential for us to discern God's specific assignments and purposes for our lives. This close relationship allows individuals to seek guidance, wisdom, and clarity on fulfilling God's plans for our lives.

There is a battle going on and God has placed us wherever we are because we are in a war.

Sometimes, we take too long to obey because we are waiting for a word, a sign, or confirmation. But it's time to rise and be challenged by the needs of the people around us.

Esther was moved into action by the urgency of the message from Mordecai and responded as follows:

"Go gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish." (Esther 4:15-16)

Some key thoughts from this post.

  • Cultivating a close relationship with God through prayer, meditation, and Bible study is essential to discern God's specific assignments and purposes for our lives.

  • God has uniquely gifted us with special gifts and skills and placed us in key places with opportunities to extend His kingdom's purposes.

  • God's call to be obedient is to everyone - for such a time as this!

In closing, let us pray for God to give us the courage to go forth as Esther did.

Let us not miss our opportunity!
