This post was inspired by our Mother’s Day sermon (May 2025), delivered by one of our senior pastors.

We reflected on a paradox: love that holds us close yet calls us to stretch beyond comfort. Our church dove into two profound scriptures that, at first glance, seem to speak differently—but together, they paint a breathtaking picture of God’s heart.

Hosea 11:1-9 gripped me with its raw tenderness. Here, God’s love for Israel is portrayed not as distant or transactional, but as a parent’s aching cry: “How can I give you up?” (v. 8). Even in Israel’s rebellion, His compassion burns hotter than judgment. It’s a reminder that we’re loved not because we’re “good enough,” but because He is.

Then came Isaiah 54:1-3—a bold call to “Enlarge the place of your tent… stretch your cords wide.” Our pastor unpacked this as a challenge to expand our spiritual capacity, even when it feels uncomfortable, even painful. Like a mother in labour, growth often comes with waves of pressure. We’re asked to trust that the stretching—the uncertainty, the surrender—is birthing something holy.

The Takeaway:

• God’s love is a lamenting love—He grieves when we wander yet refuses to let us go (Hosea).

• Growth requires embracing holy discomfort—like a mother labouring to bring forth life (Isaiah).

• The Good Shepherd leads us through lament into liberation—His voice turns our ache into awe (Psalm 23).

Are you sensing God’s lament over an area of your life? Maybe He’s grieving the distance you’ve created—or inviting you to “enlarge your tent” in faith. Either way, His heart is not to shame you, but to shepherd you. The stretching will hurt, but the valley will end—and His goodness will chase us all the way home.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, we hear Your lament over the ways we’ve wandered. Give us courage to “enlarge our tents”—to stretch, ache, and trust that You’re shepherding us through every shadow. Turn our grief into growth, and our labour into liberation. Amen.

This reflection was refined with prayerful collaboration. Grateful for tools and partners that help shepherd words toward healing.
